Cookie Policy
Last updated: 02/21/2026
Hi there, and welcome to Outdoor Awaits. This Cookie Policy explains what cookies are, how this site uses them, and what choices you have. Outdoor Awaits is a personal camping, hiking, and travel site, and I try to keep things simple and transparent.
This policy should be read along with my Privacy Policy, which explains how I handle personal data more broadly.
1) What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files that websites place on your device (computer, phone, tablet). They help a site remember things like your preferences, keep forms working, and understand how pages are used.
Cookies can be:
- Session cookies (deleted when you close your browser)
- Persistent cookies (stay until they expire or you delete them)
2) Why Outdoor Awaits uses cookies
Cookies help this site:
- Work properly (basic site functions and security)
- Remember preferences (like settings or language, if available)
- Understand what content is helpful (analytics—what pages people read, where they leave)
- Support the business side of the site (affiliate links and, if enabled, advertising)
I do not use cookies to do anything shady. The goal is basic site function, improvement, and support for the site.
3) Types of cookies you may see on this site
Depending on what features are enabled (analytics, email signup, affiliate programs, ads), you may encounter cookies in these categories:
A) Strictly Necessary Cookies
These are required for the site to function. They typically support:
- Security and fraud prevention
- Page navigation and basic features
- Consent management (remembering your cookie choices)
You usually can’t “turn off” necessary cookies through a banner without breaking key parts of the site.
B) Functional Cookies
These help the site remember choices you make (for example, preferences). If used, they improve convenience but are not strictly required.
C) Analytics / Performance Cookies
These help me understand how visitors use the site (for example: which pages are popular, how long people stay, what devices are used). This helps me improve the content and fix usability problems.
Analytics data is typically aggregated (summary-style), not intended to identify you personally.
D) Advertising Cookies (if enabled)
If I run ads now or in the future, ad partners may use cookies to:
- Measure ad performance
- Limit how often you see the same ad
- Show ads that are more relevant to your interests
If you do not see ads on the site, this category may not apply.
E) Affiliate Tracking Cookies
Some pages include affiliate links. If you click an affiliate link, the affiliate partner may set a cookie to record that you came from Outdoor Awaits. This helps attribute a purchase to the site, which may earn me a commission at no extra cost to you.
This is one way the site funds new trips and new content. For details, see my affiliate disclosure page.
4) Third-party cookies and embedded content
Some content on Outdoor Awaits may come from third parties, such as:
- Embedded videos (for example, video players)
- Maps or social media embeds (if used)
- Email signup tools (newsletter forms)
- Analytics tools
These services may set their own cookies or use similar technologies. I don’t fully control how third-party tools handle cookies, but I choose tools carefully and aim to keep things reasonable.
5) Consent and cookie choices
If you’re in regions like the UK/EU (and sometimes other locations), you may see a cookie banner or preference tool that lets you:
- Accept all cookies
- Reject non-essential cookies
- Customize cookie categories (analytics, ads, etc.)
Your choice is saved using a cookie so the site remembers your preference.
6) How to manage or delete cookies
You can control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers let you:
- See what cookies are stored
- Delete cookies
- Block all cookies
- Block third-party cookies
- Clear cookies when you close the browser
Here’s the practical downside: blocking cookies can break parts of a site (forms, preferences, or video embeds).
Common browser paths:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Cookies and other site data
- Safari: Settings/Preferences → Privacy
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and site permissions
7) “Do Not Track” signals
Some browsers offer “Do Not Track” signals. Because the web doesn’t have a consistent standard for these signals, Outdoor Awaits may not respond to all Do Not Track settings in a uniform way. The most reliable control is your cookie preferences and browser settings.
8) Changes to this Cookie Policy
I may update this policy when site tools change (for example, adding/removing analytics, ads, or newsletter features). When I update it, I’ll change the “Last updated” date at the top.
