Data Request (GDPR/CCPA)

Outdoor Awaits is a personal camping, hiking, and travel website. I run it solo. This page explains how you can request access to your personal information, ask for deletion, or make other privacy-related requests.

If you’re in the UK/EU (GDPR) or California (CCPA/CPRA), you may have specific rights under those laws. Even if you’re elsewhere, I try to handle privacy requests in a reasonable, respectful way.

1) What you can request

Depending on where you live and what laws apply, you may be able to request one or more of the following:

  • Access / “Right to know”: Ask what personal information I have about you and how it’s used.
  • Correction: Ask me to fix inaccurate personal information.
  • Deletion: Ask me to delete personal information I hold about you (with a few exceptions).
  • Portability (GDPR): Ask for a copy of your data in a usable format, where applicable.
  • Object / restrict processing (GDPR): Ask me to limit or stop certain uses where applicable.
  • Opt-out of sale/sharing (California): If a business “sells” or “shares” personal info in a legal sense, Californians may have the right to opt out. Outdoor Awaits is not a data broker, and I do not knowingly sell personal information.
  • Non-discrimination (California): You shouldn’t be treated unfairly for making a valid privacy request.

2) How to submit a request

To make a request, use one of the methods below:

Please use the subject line: “Data Request”

And include:

  1. Your name
  2. The email address you used with this site (newsletter/contact)
  3. What you want (access, deletion, correction, etc.)
  4. The page or form you used (if you remember)

This helps me find the right record without guessing.

3) Identity verification (keeping your data safe)

Before I share or delete personal information, I may need to confirm it’s really you. This protects you from someone else trying to access or delete your data.

Verification is usually simple (for example, replying from the same email you used). If extra verification is needed, I’ll explain what I need and why.

If I need more information from you to process the request, response timelines may start once I receive what’s needed.

4) How long it takes

I respond as quickly as I can. If specific laws apply:

  • UK/EU (GDPR-style requests): generally within one calendar month, and in complex cases it may be extended (up to a maximum of three calendar months), with an explanation.
  • California (CCPA/CPRA requests to know/delete/correct): generally within 45 days, and if needed it may be extended by another 45 days (up to 90 days total), with notice and a reason.

5) What I can (and can’t) delete

If you request deletion, I’ll delete what I reasonably can from my systems and service tools.

However, I may need to keep limited information when necessary for:

  • security and fraud prevention
  • legal or accounting reasons (example: records related to payments or required reporting)
  • maintaining essential site logs (sometimes handled by hosting providers)

If I can’t delete something, I’ll explain what I kept and why.

6) Authorized agents (California)

California residents may use an authorized agent to submit requests. If you use an agent, I may ask for proof that the agent is authorized to act for you, and I may still need to verify your identity directly.

7) What data this usually involves on Outdoor Awaits

Most personal data on this site typically comes from:

  • contact form messages (name, email, message content)
  • newsletter signups (name/email if you subscribe)
  • basic server logs (like IP address and device info, usually handled by hosting/security tools)

As the site grows, tools may change. If I add analytics or other tracking tools later, I’ll update the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
