Nilachal Bandarban for Clouds and Sunset: Complete Travel Guide
Nilachal (Bengali: নীলাচল) is a hilltop tourist spot in Bandarban, Bangladesh, located about 5 kilometers from Bandarban town. It sits roughly 2,000 feet above sea level on a hill in the Tiger Para area. The spot is popular for its views of clouds, sunrise, and sunset across the surrounding hills, and on a clear day you can see toward the distant Cox’s Bazar coast.
Nilachal is one of the busiest tourist spots in all of Bandarban district, and visitors come and go here every single day. Government employees also head up for a quick day out on their weekly holidays. For me, it is the place I have returned to more than anywhere else, probably over a hundred times by now. Every time I go, I also get to meet my cousin Akash, who works there in the security department, so a visit always turns into good time together.

How to Reach Nilachal Bandarban
Reaching Nilachal happens in two stages. First you travel to Bandarban town, and then you cover the final 5 kilometers up to the hilltop. Here is the route at a glance:
- Travel from Dhaka to Bandarban by bus
- Or reach Chittagong first, then take a bus to Bandarban
- From Bandarban town, hire a CNG, or a jeep if you are not alone
- Ride about 5 km up to the Nilachal hilltop
Day visitors can stay only from sunrise to sunset. Only resort guests are permitted to stay overnight at the top. So during the December-to-February peak and on holidays, book your room and transport ahead of time.

Dhaka to Bandarban
Several bus operators run directly from Dhaka to Bandarban, including Shyamoli, Saudia, S. Alam, Unique, Saint Martin Paribahan, and Hanif. Non-AC tickets cost roughly 800 to 900 BDT per person, while AC tickets run about 1,200 to 1,800 BDT. If you leave around 9 to 10 at night, you usually arrive in Bandarban by 7 the next morning. Alternatively, you can take a train or flight from Dhaka to Chittagong and continue from there.
Chittagong to Bandarban
From Chittagong, two buses named Pubali and Purbani depart from Baddarhat toward Bandarban. The fare is around 220 BDT per person. This option works well when you arrive in Chittagong by train or air first.
Bandarban town to Nilachal
Once you reach Bandarban town, you can hire a CNG, or a jeep (Chander Gari) for the trip up. A round trip by auto rickshaw usually costs between 500 and 1,000 BDT, depending on how long you stay at the top. Jeeps run about 800 to 1,200 BDT, and a Chander Gari ranges from 1,000 to 2,000 BDT. Whatever you pick, agree on the fare and bargain a little before you set off, because drivers often quote higher rates to visitors. It helps to know the usual tactics that target tourists so you do not overpay.
What you can see from Nilachal
Nilachal gives you a wide view of the entire Bandarban town below. On a clear, cloud-free day, you can also look out toward the Cox’s Bazar coastline far in the distance. Meanwhile, the winding hill roads on the way up are part of what makes the drive enjoyable.

Morning and late afternoon are the two best windows. In the early morning, clouds often come close to the hilltop during the monsoon, autumn, and late-autumn months. By late afternoon, the sunset becomes the main reason people stay. Because each point on the hill faces a slightly different direction, the view also changes as you walk around.
If you like this kind of hill scenery, the viewpoint at Chimbuk Hill and the cloud views at Sajek Valley are worth adding to a longer trip.
When is the best time to visit Nilachal?
The best time to visit Nilachal is the winter season, from December through February, with the monsoon and autumn months added in if you want clouds. Winter brings clear skies and comfortable weather, so it pulls the biggest crowds. During the monsoon, autumn, and late autumn, clouds come close to the hilltop in the early morning.
Keep in mind that prices rise during the December-to-February season and on government holidays, since more tourists arrive then. Therefore, if you plan to go during a busy stretch, book ahead. Choosing the right season for a destination can also help you dodge crowds and find better rates.
Where to Stay near Nilachal
You have two main choices here. You can stay on the hilltop itself, or you can base yourself in Bandarban town nearby.
Staying at Nilachal
At the top, Nilachal Scape Resort offers three cottages, and each cottage has two rooms. A room costs around 3,000 BDT per night. Rooms here are limited, so book in advance by contacting the resort before you travel. As noted earlier, only resort guests can stay past sunset, while everyone else has to head back down.
Hotels in Bandarban town
Since Nilachal sits close to Bandarban, many people stay in town and visit the hilltop during the day. A few options worth knowing:
- Hotel Hill View, beside the bus stand, around 1,200 to 2,500 BDT.
- Hotel Hilton, near the bus stand, around 1,200 to 3,000 BDT.
- Hotel Plaza, a five-minute walk from the bus stand, around 1,000 to 3,000 BDT.
- River View, along the bank of the Sangu River, around 1,000 to 2,000 BDT.
- Porjoton Motel, beside hills and a lake at Meghla, about 4 km from town, around 1,200 to 2,500 BDT.
Beyond these, Bandarban has many more hotels, motels, and rest houses where a night runs anywhere from 500 to 3,000 BDT. Rates shift with the season, so confirm the current price when you book.
Where to eat at Nilachal
Food options at Nilachal itself are limited. If you stay overnight at Nilachal Scape Resort, the staff arranges your meals. Otherwise, there is only one restaurant on the hill, Forest Hill, so it pays to plan ahead. I usually carry light snacks from Bandarban and then head back to town for a proper meal.
In Bandarban town, however, you will find plenty of places to eat. Tajing Dong Cafe, Meghdoot Cafe, Food Place Restaurant, Rupasi Bangla Restaurant, Ree Song Song, and Kolapata Restaurant are all popular choices.
A few practical tips
Go very early if clouds are your main goal, because they thin out as the sun climbs. Carry water and snacks too, since the hilltop has, but price is very expensive. Always settle your transport fare before you start, and bargain politely. Finally, book your room early during winter and on public holidays, when both rooms and vehicles fill up fast.
